Priority Issues of the National MFSA:
Racial Justice: MFSA acknowledges the reality of White privilege and works
against racism within the church and society. We support the initiative of
the UM Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns on
Repentance and Reconciliation and support the UM Commission on Religion and
Race and other UM agencies that confront racism.
Economic Justice: MFSA advocates forming global and local models creating
new dimensions of economic justice. We call on the church at all levels to
harness the power of its investments for social good. We promote programs
that assist current and former welfare recipients in making the transition
from dependence to economic health and promote health care as a basic human
right.
An Inclusive Church: We advocate the full inclusion in the church of women,
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons, those of all racial and
ethnic backgrounds and people with disabilities. In the church we promote
inclusive language in worship and hymnody, the ethnic minority local church
priorities, and the Reconciling Congregation Program.
Empowerment of Women: MFSA supports reproductive choice and supports the UM
Commission on the Status and Role of Women and other agencies that continue
to confront sexism. We challenge the church structures and positions taken
by church agencies that perpetrate and preserve patriarchal attitudes.
Peace and Disarmament: MFSA promotes peaceful resolution of conflict and an
end to war. We urge US payment of UN dues and ratification of UN human rights
treaties. MFSA opposes the death penalty and supports strict gun control.
We are a supporting member of the Campaign to Ban Landmines. MFSA calls for
an end to US economic sanctions in Iraq and for the closing of the School of
the Americas. We advocate for cessation of US military aid to Colombia and
support a negotiated settlement to the civil war there.
Palestinian Homeland: A just peace in the Mideast requires an end to Israeli
occupation of Palestinian territories, along with secure boundaries for
Israel. MFSA has created the Middle East Network of United Methodists
(MENUM) to promote united action. We endorse responsible holy land tours.
Environmental Justice: MFSA protests the special environmental burden which
falls upon the poor. We stand in opposition to mountaintop removal/valley
fill coal mining. We call for reform in handling medical waste and for the
elimination of persistent organic pollutants.
